Hello from Fantasy Worlds

Hi, I’m Alana. My journey into gaming started when I was about 13 or 14 years old. I found the internet and a way to make friends outside of school. I started out on Yahoo Groups with a few different play-by-post roleplaying games (RPGs). I even found one based on Dragon Ball Z called “Royal Saiyan Empire”. Most of these died by the time I was a senior in high school. In college I found tabletop RPGs. My first game master (GM) ran Dungeons & Dragons 2nd edition. His GM style didn’t fit with my gaming style. However my next GM ran a D20 Star Wars edition game that I was able to play a Wookie in. I loved it and have been hooked ever since. I’m still friends with many of the people from that Star Wars game even if we don’t regularly play together anymore. During these same college years my love of anime grew and I was able to go to my first convention or con. At this anime con I found live action roleplaying (LARPing). Getting to dress up in character and pretend to be that character? Yes please! Even today when I go shopping I shop for me and for Elaine, Sveta, and Abigail just to name a few. Always updating their costumes and finding pieces that can be used again with other characters. Which brings me to my next love, cosplay. I’m not as good at cosplay as others, I have made a few mistakes I will be writing about that hopefully others can learn from. For me cosplay is a hobby and gaming is my life.

I moved on from anime cons to gaming cons. I currently go to many in Upstate and Western NY as well as Ohio. My favorites are Running GAGG, Con on the Cob, and Origins. Many of my articles will be about getting ready for these cons, meeting people, places to eat, and finding games that suit you. I will also be interested in your questions as our reader for future articles and topics.

About Alana

Alana’s Nerd Cred is unquestionable. She was a contestant on the first season of TBS’ reality TV show King of the Nerds. When she isn’t enjoying the limelight that being on TV brings, she also loves playing board games, tabletop RPGs, and LARPing. She began gaming in a play-by-post format and moved on to tabletop RPGs in college. Her love of anime brought her to her first convention, where she discovered LARPing. Now she goes to gaming-centric conventions and meets new people and joins them in exciting adventures in games around the convention. At home Alana runs a Monday night game and helps run a monthly Vampire: The Masquerade LARP.
